Looking Forward to Lingering

Spring is near! I know this because I see the plants poking out of the ground in my yard and because I am in the middle of my annual winter-turning-into-spring-sinus-infection.While I sit around jittery from the steroids I’m on, I’m trying to think ahead. What I’m looking forward to, what I see as the official start of spring and summer (as long as it’s warm, these are the same to me) is sitting on my front porch swing reading a book and drinking a beer while the sun shines on my face.

I like the lazy feeling that comes with warm weather, encouraging you to linger. I love watching the people walk down my street, seeing who is planting what in their yard, having our outdoor neighborhood cats, Michael Jordan and Bolt, weave in and out of my legs looking for pets. One of the greatest things is being so relaxed that you unintentionally fall asleep, because sleeping in the sunshine is the best feeling.

Until then, I am going to make the most of today. While staying home sick, I’ll make do with lingering on my couch and taking advantage of Netflix. But soon… it will be warm outside and I can properly linger.

Why I love the Internet: In Praise of Convenience and Gluttony

Trying to prove an argument? Remember an actor’s name? Learn the actual lyrics to a song? Hop online and you have your answer. And while I am annoyed by how many in-person conversations are interrupted by people tapping away at their smart phones, or, as my dad one called them, their tiny, dumb computers, I am grateful to have so much information readily available. And information is all well and good, but do you know what is so much more fun? Being able to buy just about anything. Seriously. Anything.

Wonder Boy and I were watching TV and contemplating that evening’s dinner. He tried to tempt me with some sub-par rice mix, rice being one of my favorite foods, but I called him on the shoddy representation of rice.

“What happened to the dirty rice with cheese?” I asked.

“We’re out,” he said.

And then I whipped out my little, dumb computer and a few minutes later, a case – A CASE – of dirty rice with cheese was on its way to our house. And, because if you’re buying a case of one thing, why not throw in another, I also got a case of grape Bubblicious, which is impossible to find in stores.

I think if my health-conscious father saw the joy on my face as I opened up the box, he might have thrown up a little.

What’s Making Me Happy

There a feature at the end of each episode of Pop Culture Happy Hour, my current obsession, called “What’s Making Me Happy.” I love that the podcast ends on a happy note and am trying to end my weeks with that same happy note.

Because my goal is just to highlight something positive, and not necessarily write long prose, I’m adding the item to the Facebook page only.

I encourage you to like my Facebook page to check out what’s making me happy!

Animal Memo Holders – A Pinterest Inspired Project

I’ve been on Pinterest for the past two years and I’ve gotten heaps of ideas from the site (as well as loads of guilt about what I’m not accomplishing). For me, most craft projects I try out need to meet a two requirements before I’ll try them out: cheap and easy. My most recent trial came thanks to a pin linking Sugar and Cloth about animal memo holders.

I made a series of these memo holders in different colors and it went great. All the supplies you need are a plastic animal, a dowel rod, an alligator clip, some spray paint in the color and finish of your choice and some glue. I sprayed the animal, spray a length of the dowel rod the same color. Then I drilled a hole into the top of the animal and stuck the dowel rod right in. (It was a tight fit so I didn’t even use glue.) I then glued the alligator clip to the dowel rod and voila!

I’m using mine to hold my new year’s resolutions for the year but they they would work great for hold recipes, to do lists, photographs and more!

Humanity

Lately I’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of people. It’s a welcome break from the idiocy that normally dominates news stories and confronts me all around.

What has overwhelmed me are not large acts. Rather, its the compiling of many small acts. Connections between people. A former co-worker receiving an outpouring of support from so many people. A personal connection made with a postal worker. The trust of a client leaving me her house key under her apartment doormat. Help from friends and family with my pets.

It’s nice to be reminded how nice we all can be. How we can all connect once we pull ourselves from behind a screen. How we all are able to support and love one another.
