The Product of Creative Frustration

Gigabiggles

There’s been a lot of drama in my household around cameras lately that I’d rather not go into but I will say it resulted in an upgrade for me so you’ll be seeing a lot of fantabulous photography in the future. During the process, I had to purchase some new memory cards for my camera. New cameras mean more megapixels and more megapixels mean bigger file sizes. Below is a snapshot of my newest memory card and my oldest.

The yesterday on Woot I had the option to buy a 64 gig card. (I didn’t.) My how times have changed.

What I’ve Been Clicking On This Week

This week has gone by in a blur, but I still found some time to distract myself online.

  • While I do have a storage container for my gift wrap supplies, my wrapping paper won’t all fit in it so I have it all propped up inside my bedroom closet. It works fine when the paper is still shrink-wrapped, but once it’s open… what a mess. Until now. Joy Astle shares a wonderful idea for keeping your wrapping paper organized and doing a little recycling at the same time.
  • My mom has a total green thumb and always has stuff growing at home. After seeing her work wonders with so many plants, I don’t think this concept should have been new to me. Homemade Serenity shares tips on how to make food last. The tips are good in general, but the one for making your supply of green onions never run out is genius.
  • Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. While major greetings card companies make a huge  profit over the next few weeks, I’m more intrigued by what smaller card designers are producing. I wish this Awesome! card wasn’t sold out or it would be mine. (It reminds me of How I Met Your Mother.) Totally not a Valentine’s Day Card but I saw a birthday card interspersed with the holiday ones. I wish they didn’t come in sets of 10 because I know my mom would get a kick out of this card. I didn’t buy it, but I really like this I Freakin’ Love You card because it’s stitched and I just think that is awesome.
  • Infographics are getting a lot of attention online lately. There have been some great tongue-in-cheek ones created. I especially like these infographs that Book Riot posted featuring young adult heroines.
  • Last but not least, I want to point everyone to my friend Steve’s new blog Citizen Pork. The blog is a photo journal of positive things and people in Cincinnati. His photography is really beautiful and I’ve loved seeing him tackle new subjects. His most recent post on the Save the Animals Foundation here in Cincinnati has some adorable pictures of animals and helps champion a cause I care deeply about.

Thanks

Thank you, Wonder Boy, for listening to me when I’m struggling, making me dinner when I’m too tired to cook, taking me out on fun dates and explaining to me in great depth how bluetooth technology works.

Thank you to all of my family for lots of laughs and support.

Thank you Ohio Alleycat Resource & Spay / Neuter Clinic for letting me foster Matzah Ball and Latke. They’ve made coming home in the evening so much more fun and I can think of nothing greater than having them curl up on my chest in the morning, purring up a storm.

Thank you to my friends for lots of evenings out, tons of laughter and keeping me in touch with great music, good books and more dumb great stuff online than I could ever hope to discover on my own.

Thank you to my photography teacher for getting me feeling creative again. In the past months I’ve felt inspired in a way I hadn’t in a while.

Thank you to Biggie for unintentionally making me laugh on a regular basis by forgetting to put your tongue back in your mouth and to Addy for being a loyal shadow.

Thank you to the too many friends I have who are struggling their own battles right now for giving me an example of how to persevere and live a good, honorable life.

Library

Last weekend when I went out shooting photos, I found several things that inspired me outside of my local library.

This picture of a seed pod is one of my favorite. I don’t know how I could have gotten the focus more right.

I also love the raised type of the book return slot.

I love when I find things that are solid but decaying, like this handrail with shipping paint.

Illusions

I love when I take photographs of things and the end result, without fancy editing, looks different from the actual object. It’s like magic.

I recently went driving around the city looks for things to photograph and found myself on a playground. There were rings children could swing from, but my photographs of the rings look much more sinister … more like handcuffs.

Then I took a photograph of a drinking fountain and I think it looks a little … phallic.
