The Product of Creative Frustration

Sunshine on My Mind

This past weekend it rained and rained and rained, so when on Sunday it stopped raining, I stayed outside as much as possible. Camera in tow, I captured some of the sunshiney beauty around me.

Warthogs

One of my biggest downfalls creatively is that I struggle with reconciling what I see in my head with what I actually create. I have definitely spent a lot of time making something only to throw it in the trash afterwards because it was so far off from what I intended. In my screenprinting class at DIY Printing, my first project was  DSLR camera print. I was pretty proud of it because I made something using a technique I’ve so long admired. I tried so hard to be cool with the end product. So what if I didn’t plan for the fact the image would flip and my camera turned out left-handed? So what if my lines weren’t too straight? I made it! But after the buzz of seeing my finished piece wore off, I was a little like, “Eh.”

The next project we did let us be more exact by working with transparencies to create our screenprints. Ohmigod so much easier. I played around with a picture of a warthog and was pretty excited to see how would turn out. I love it!!!

I went from this image

to this print.
Here’s a print without the green background.
Totally patting myself on the back here, but this is great. In fact, this is better than what I saw in my head. I can’t wait to get started on the next project!

Lens Envy

At the Obama rally on Sunday night I had serious lens envy. Professional photographers from outlets around the nation (world?) were present and their gear was amazing.

I was using my DSLR and phone – the DSLR was for all of the pictures you see here and the phone was for social media uploads, though I did get some good shots on it. I was fortunate in that there were a lot of iPad photographers there to make me feel better about myself. The pictures might turn out okay, but it just looks so … awkward.

I’m not saying you have to have a fancy camera, though I would never discourage it. But I do think if I was going to see his guy

or this guy

then I might not walk around shooting pictures with my iPad.

Beach Photos

I’m handling the transition into cooler weather very poorly. My shorts are packed away but I still have some evidence of summer like these pictures from a trip last month.

Happy

Random things that have made me happy lately:

  • Wonder Boy and I went to the pool yesterday and followed it up with some soft serve. I don’t care what Ronald Reagan (not the real one) says. Soft serve is ice cream and I love it. Especially dipped in rainbow sprinkles. Next weekend is the last that our pool is open. Wonder Boy put “Go to the Pool” on our calendar for every day this upcoming weekend.
  • I’m actually caught up on True Blood, which is such a good show. Days when I have a new episode to look forward to? The best.
  • Wonder Boy and I spent about 8 hours making jam last week. Hard work but definitely satisfying. And don’t start clamoring for your jar just yet. Eight hours we spent making that stuff so I want to just hang on to it a bit.
  • At work I’ve been immersed in this long project that takes time and skill but is also a little tedious. But, when combined with my iPad and Netflix subscription, time flies! I’ve watched the entire series of Numbers and several movies. Have any movies you’d like to recommend? I’m open to suggestions as long as there are no boobs shown during the movie, which is how I’m screening what’s workplace appropriate.
  • I’m number 39 on this list on Maggie Mason’s blog of things that make you happy. Just being on the list makes me happy.
  • On Saturday I got to watch my niece. I was a little surly later in the day from having to wake up so early (I don’t know how my sister does it) but hanging out with the little gal was worth it. She’s obsessed with these two little dolls … and with spitting. It’s pretty funny.
  • I finally got off my bum and played around with a new macro lens I bought for my camera. I’m still just playing but I like the way it makes images a little softer (see above) and how I can get really close to … whatever.
