The Product of Creative Frustration

What I’ve Been Clicking On This Week

The beauty of the holidays is that people start doing gift round-ups and I find out about all sorts of cool things online. Here are some of my favorite discoveries:

  • A love of small spaces, if I had $40,000 to kill, I would totally buy this cute little pod. I’d have it in my backyard and use it as a hideout.
  • In my 111-year-old house, storage is always an issue so I love clever storage solutions like this one for spools of thread.
  • I was talking with a friend at work and she referred me to two old but funny videos she uses to cheer herself up on bad days. Totally funny!

  • What do you think of this project idea for using a bleach pen to personalize and decorate your clothing? I’m not 100% sure, but I think I like it!

Melting Hearts

One of the worst parts about fostering animals is having to give them up. It’s still worth it, mind you, but hard. Tonight someone is coming to visit Matzah Ball and Latke to see if they’re a good adoption match. If not, we’re taking them to an adoption fair and they’ll stay at a local pet store until adopted.

This is the best thing for them, I know. Their cute faces will melt someone’s heart like they have mine. In the meantime, I am trying to enjoy them. Last night I sat in a bedroom gift wrapping and the kittens (who are not helpful with wrapping) wanted so badly to leave their room and hang out with me. They spent the whole hour or two trying to squeeze under the door and staring pitifully at me.

When I was done gift wrapping, I played with them for a while. And despite the look of sadness on Matzah Ball’s face, he rebounded and was a pile of purrs as soon as I picked him up.

Update, 12.2.2011: Matzah Ball and Latke have indeed found a new home. They’ll be going home tonight. While Wonder Boy and I are going to be super sad, the couple who is adopting them left our house last night so excited!

Thanks

Thank you, Wonder Boy, for listening to me when I’m struggling, making me dinner when I’m too tired to cook, taking me out on fun dates and explaining to me in great depth how bluetooth technology works.

Thank you to all of my family for lots of laughs and support.

Thank you Ohio Alleycat Resource & Spay / Neuter Clinic for letting me foster Matzah Ball and Latke. They’ve made coming home in the evening so much more fun and I can think of nothing greater than having them curl up on my chest in the morning, purring up a storm.

Thank you to my friends for lots of evenings out, tons of laughter and keeping me in touch with great music, good books and more dumb great stuff online than I could ever hope to discover on my own.

Thank you to my photography teacher for getting me feeling creative again. In the past months I’ve felt inspired in a way I hadn’t in a while.

Thank you to Biggie for unintentionally making me laugh on a regular basis by forgetting to put your tongue back in your mouth and to Addy for being a loyal shadow.

Thank you to the too many friends I have who are struggling their own battles right now for giving me an example of how to persevere and live a good, honorable life.

What I’ve Been Checking Out This Week

Here are some of the things I’ve been clicking on this week:

  • Wonder Boy live in a 111-year-old row house we fondly call The Big Blue House. Technically it’s a three-story home but the attic space, while technically finished, is lacking amenities like insulation, heat or air. Right now the space is used for storage but coveted by both Wonder Boy and I for its potential. I love the attic office space featured on Sparkling Glitter. Space is used efficiently but there’s room for everything.
  • Cincinnati-based animal rescuer Save the Animals Foundation is having a holiday drive called the 12 Dogs of Christmas. They are trying to find homes for 12 dogs in time for the holidays and the pictures they have of the various dogs are so, so cute.
  • One of the best blogs I’ve seen in a long while is Kitten Covers. The site features album covers redone with kittens instead of people. On the one hand, my affection for the site might come off as a little Crazy Cat Lady. But! I also think it’s really clever and features cats in clothes. In my book any animal that is dressed up is funny.
  • I’ve been in a book club for 5 years now and whenever we meet there is wine involved. Or, in my case, beer. This tote would be a great way for all of the ladies to carry their books to book club meetings.
  • Finally, proof that listening to a little Notorious B.I.G. is nothing but good.

Getting Ready for Work

Because I see no reason why kids should be the only ones dressing up on Halloween, I dressed up our foster kitties. Latke was a smart businesswoman in her striped necktie and Matzah Ball was a slightly sleazier businessman in his Hawaiian-designed necktie.

You might think that small kittens would not enjoy wearing neckties and you would be right. But, when you weigh only 2 (Matzah Ball) or 3 (Latke) pounds, you don’t have much choice in the matter. Plus, Wonder Boy and I placed the kitties on my Eames rocker, which is a whopping 26.5 inches off the ground, which is a staggering height if you are a small kitten.
